Well, I had to get one of me - as close as I can get to my ancestors right now. It was wonderful to be there walking in the places that the old Bullards walked in.
I asked the people living there if they thought this huge tower was an eye sore and they all said with one voice. We love it - it's wonderful to see even this much history. It was built in the 1300's. There is a chicken coup behind it. Oh, the indignity of a once great church. They said that when they were digging up ground for gardens and their houses, they found all kinds of bones from the once grave yard. Man, they could be digging up my ancestors. You can see the tower from far away.
Water Lane is the street that the Bullard's lived on - right by St. Martin's Church. It was wonderful to even see the name of the street and know that that's where my people came from. We intend to go to the Isle of Wight before we leave. Another branch of our main line come from there. I just want to be there. I don't expect to get any new information.

Hello, My name is Jessica. I am a descendant of William Bullard born 1562, his father Henry is my 11th gr grandfather. Love the info and photos. My gr grandmother is Martha Bullard. She married Edward (Abraham)Hughes.
ReplyDeleteHello,my name is Daniel Bullard. I also am a descendant of William Bullard born in 1562.I have managed to trace the Bullard familiy line back to about 1280. That was John Buller. Also the first recorded spelling of the Bullard last name was Henry Buliard in 1198 in Suffolk county.Later in 1273 there was Geoffrey Bolhard and Fulco Bolhard in 1275,but I do not know if they were related,as people sometimes spelled things differently back then. So here is what I found-John BullerJ
ReplyDelete,Sr.Born 1280,or sometime thereafter?,John Buller Jr.1330 to1383,John Nicholas Buller III Born 1380 to ??,John Buller IV Born 1395 to 1436, John Buller Born 1432 to ? John Buller Born 1458 to ?.Also,I am 100% sure of the previous family history but am for the rest.John Buller or Bullard 1485-1535,John Buller or Bullard 1510-1545,Henry Buller or Bullard1535-1591,William Bullard or Buller, and William Bullard or Buller 1594-1687.In 1632 William and brothers Benjamin,John, and Isaac emigrated to an area near Boston,Massachusettes.William dropped the Buller spelling from the last name and it became Bullard. The ones after William Bullard that I descend from are as follows:Isaac,Samuel,Samuel Jr.,Benjamin,Oliver,Mark,Job,Van Marion,Trevor,my father Alvin Bullard and then myself Daniel Bullard. Also, this may be of a little interest-Mark Bullard had 8 children-4 boys and 4 girls and was a minister. In 1849 they must have heard about the 1849 gold rush in california and the 4 boys set out for California and the minister and 4 girls stayed at home. They left from Stockbridge,Vermont in 1849 on the Ship Restless-appropriate name- and landed in San Francisco in 1850.They started mining in California, then worked their way on up to Oregon. Finally on August 12,1853 they came by boat to Pacific county, and started a sawmill on the south bend of the river.Later the town was named South Bend,Washington. They cut the logs square so that they wouldn't roll around in the ship and sent them to California and the first load was profitable. But the second load was lost at sea, just as they got to California! Then the third load was also lost to bad weather. Finally they got the forth load to California, but the market dropped and they could'nt sell the logs! So then 3 of the brothers decided to start farming there in the willipa.Later 3 of the first 4 Donation Land claims in Pacific county were filed by the Bullard brothers. My father Alvin Bullard was the last to own the farmland, but he just rented the pasture. I asked him once when I was little why we didnt live on a farm, instead of the town.He said it is hard to find someone to take care of your animals if you want to go anywhere, and since he was the youngest of the five kids, he always got stuck cleaning out the barn! So,I guess that is why my brothers and I didnt get to carry on the family tradtion of being on a farm. Also,I might note that his brothers and sister must have felt the same way too-as none of them had farms either once they left home! Hope you enjoyed reading this.
The previous statement should say near the beginning "that I'm not 100% sure of the Bullard family history before 1485"-the word -not- somehow got left out.
